Carrollwood Country Club

This year, the longtime Johnny P. Sims Memorial Tournament begins a new chapter as it joins with Cali’s Courage, a nonprofit organization supporting individuals and families with Williams syndrome.

Together, we are honoring the legacy and generosity that built this tournament while expanding its impact to support children and families affected by Williams syndrome. It is a celebration of two meaningful stories coming together to create greater hope, resources, and possibilities for the families who need them most.

    Remembering Johnny P. Sims

Throughout his life, Johnny P. Sims had a remarkable way of bringing people together. Whether serving in the U.S. Air Force, working as an air traffic controller, building businesses, contributing to his community, or enjoying a round of golf, Johnny formed friendships wherever he went and became well known throughout Tampa Bay. To those closest to him, however, he was best known for his humor, generosity, and larger-than-life spirit. He loved entertaining family and friends and lived every day fully and without regret.

The Johnny P. Sims Memorial Tournament was created to keep that spirit alive. Over the years, it has brought together the people and community Johnny loved while carrying forward the joy and generosity that defined him.

This partnership with Cali’s Courage is deeply personal. Johnny’s son, Eric, and Cali’s father, Clete, met through their shared love of soccer and have been great friends ever since. Over the years, their families have grown incredibly close, and Eric has developed a special bond with Cali. Eric knows his father would be proud to see the tournament carrying his name support a cause that means so much to all of them.

As the tournament moves forward, Johnny’s legacy will continue through friendship, generosity, and a shared commitment to helping others. Every round played in his honor will now help create greater hope, resources, and possibilities for children with Williams syndrome and the families who love them.

    The Courage Behind the Classic

Cali Rose is the joyful, determined little girl at the heart of Cali’s Courage. At around six months old, she was diagnosed with Williams syndrome, a rare genetic condition that can affect the heart, development, muscle tone, and many other areas of health. In an instant, her family entered a world of cardiology appointments, specialists, therapies, medical travel, unanswered questions, and uncertainty about what her future might hold.

Today, Cali is doing incredibly well, and her family is deeply grateful. But they also recognize that many children with Williams syndrome are not as fortunate. For some families, the diagnosis is only the beginning. Their children may face multiple medical diagnoses, open-heart surgery, repeated procedures, ongoing therapies, and a lifetime of care involving numerous specialists. Many must travel far from home to find physicians who truly understand the complexities of Williams syndrome.

Cali’s journey opened her family’s eyes to how overwhelming, expensive, and isolating this path can be. It also revealed how much is still unknown and how urgently additional research, education, and access to specialized care are needed.

Cali inspired the creation of Cali’s Courage, but the mission reaches far beyond her story. The foundation exists for every family sitting beside a hospital bed, traveling across the country for answers, fighting for the right therapies, or simply trying to find hope after receiving a life-changing diagnosis.

    Thank you to our sponsors!
